“Les Enfants Terribles” are wheelthrown sculptures that defy expectations of functional thrown vessels. Repeated compression of clay particles as they transform in centrifugal movement renders a thrown wall more resilient than rolled slab, but not entirely immune to tension when the wall is anatomized. The movement of the clay body is memorialized in throwing marks, and accentuated as appendages cut out of the walls reach out for each other. Flux, oxides and wax accelerate and thwart in turn glaze movement on the surface, punctuated by matted citron islets. This sculpture series is a muddy contemplation on cross-cultural migrants like myself, who are the experiments of the resilience and transformability called Life, retaining traces of our origins yet not conforming to what is expected of us.
