Amakusa natural stone porcelain, Gosu / underglaze, transparent glaze
Year
2025
Technique
Wheelthrown & modified, fired in reduction
Dimensions
Varies, up to H 18 cm, W 13 cm
Selected wheelthrown pieces created during my Artist in Residency at Kouraku Kiln in Arita, Japan, hand painted with traditional cobalt underglaze (Gosu). Amakusa porcelain is made from a natural stone with no added ingredients. Very little water could be used during wheel throwing. When fired at reduction in the gas kiln, its natural iron content gives a gentle blue undertone.
