Project Arita II
Materials
Amakusa natural stone porcelain, underglazes incl. Gosu, overglazes, transparent glaze
Year
2025
Technique
Slip casting, fired in reduction
Primarily slip-cast pieces created during my Artist in Residency at Kouraku Kiln in Arita, Japan, hand painted with traditional cobalt underglaze (Gosu) as well as overglaze in some cases. Amakusa porcelain is made from a natural stone with no added ingredients. Very little water could be used during wheel throwing. When fired at reduction in the gas kiln, its natural iron content gives a gentle blue undertone.
