Project Arita III - At Home With Words
Materials
Amakusa natural stone porcelain, Gosu / underglaze, overglaze, transparent glaze
Year
2025
Technique
Wheelthrown, fired in reduction
Dimensions
On average H 9cm, W 8.5cm
These wheelthrown pieces created during my Artist in Residency at Kouraku Kiln in Arita, Japan are a series of word play in the five languages I speak. Thrown off the hump and hand painted with traditional cobalt underglaze (Gosu), 3 of them also underwent a third firing after overglaze painting. Amakusa porcelain is made from a natural stone with no added ingredients. Very little water could be used during wheel throwing. When fired at reduction in the gas kiln, its natural iron content gives a gentle blue undertone.
